Bishop Donald L. Smith is married to the former Meredith Dianne Spencer. He is also the father of two adult children, Jerry and Unita Smith. He is an accomplished Teacher, Evangelist, Singer, Songwriter, Pastor and Preacher. He is currently Pastor of Greater Mount Calvary Christian Church, (Two Locations) President, Founder and CEO of The Whole Truth Ministries, Inc., Director of The Whole Truth Ministries Bible Institute , and Principal of “Sunbeam” Christian Preschool and Academy, in Manassas, Virginia.
Bishop Smith is a native of Black Mountain, North Carolina.
After graduating from Owen High School High School, in Swannanoa, N.C. in 1968 he joined the U.S. Army and served honorably for 6 years. (3 active)
After his service term using the G.I. Bill he enrolled in Blanton’s Business College of Asheville, North Carolina where he earned an Associates Degree in Business Management.
Immediately employed by Consolidated Credit Finance Co. of Asheville, N.C., Setting a new standard Bishop became the first African American hired to work in the banking and finance industry in Western, N.C. He was employed for seven years working as Collection Manager, Loan Manager and Assistant Manager.
Bishops interest in the transportation industry led him to resign from the world of finance and sought a position in the transportation industry. He gained employment with The Southern Railway Company of Ashville, N.C. which later after a merger became Norfolk Southern Railway Company. Bishop was transferred to Alexandria, Virginia where he remained employed for 15 years. At the time of his departure in 1990 from Norfolk Southern Railway he had attained the position of a Mechanical Safety Inspector.
Bishop Smith is a distinguished Army Veteran. During his tour of duty during the Vietnam era he became a proficient Paratrooper, Recondo and Airborne Ranger while achieving the rank of SGT/E-5.
One of the highlights of his tour was to serve as an instructor at the West Point Military Academy in West Point , New York.
In September of 1984 Bishop Smith accepted his call into the gospel ministry. While at The Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, in Triangle Virginia where Dr. Fredrick S. Jones is Pastor. Faithfully serving as an Evangelist, Choir Director and Minister of Singles he was licensed in December of 1985 and was ordained as the Pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Catharpin, VA in June of 1990.
Shortly after seeing the Vision and great potential at Mount Calvary, Bishop was led to resign from his job to take on the call of a full time Pastorate with out full time benefits truly believing and trusting God to make a way.
Bishop Smith is one runner who read, believed and ran with the vision that Miss. Jeannie Dean the founder in 1880 began. Continuing to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and teaching biblical principles of God’s word the Church began to grow.
In 1992, because of the enormous growth rate Bishop was led to expand the ministry facilities but without the corporation of neighbors to sale the Church more land for expansion Bishop implemented a plan of relocating to a larger facility into the City of Manassas, Va. The plan was accepted by the leadership and congregation of The Mount Calvary family and a new site was located, approved and purchased.
At this new location of 5 plus acres The Mount Calvary Church was able to expand the sanctuary capacity to 500 plus and the “Sunbeam” Christian Preschool was also established in an adjacent building.
In September 1994 Kindergarten and Academy Grades 1– 5 were added to include before and after care with bus services , as well as a full-scale industrial kitchen and staff to prepare hot meals. (The vision entails 12 grades and college)
In May of 1995 Bishop Smith earned “Two” Bachelors degrees from the Richmond Virginia Seminary, in Richmond VA. He was awarded a Bachelor of Theology and a Bachelor of Religious Studies. A year later in May of 1996, he received a Masters Degree in Theology. May of 1997, he was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity Degree from this prestigious institution of religious studies. Bishop has also studied at Washington Bible College of Lanham, MD and Liberty University of Lynchburg, VA.
He is a member of the Association of Christian Counselors and the Northern VA Baptist Ministerial Alliance.
In 1997, lead by the Spirit, Bishop Smith introduced the congregation of Mount Calvary the expansion program “Faith Walk 2000” which has further unfolded the Great Vision of the Church.
On January 30, 1998, Bishop Smith birthed a ministry that God placed within him. That is “The Whole Truth Ministries” (WTM). This ministry was introduced to the church as a ministry that will work along the side of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
The goals and challenge of WTM is to reach all nations by the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This ministry has a strong evangelistic outreach, as it aids local pastors and their congregations in equipping for Christian service by offering an array of Christian Education programs and also providing an avenue for gifted artist, singers, poets and writers to be published and copyrighted.
Leading the way he has produced and provided lead vocals for two gospel Albums, “There is Hope , and All The Way With Jesus”.
To actualize the Great Commission WTM strongly supports foreign missions.
Bishop Smith has traveled internationally to Uganda East Africa, Brazil, Jamaica, West Indies, Antigua and St. Thomas, VI. ,
The St. Thomas trip accommodated over 250 men and boys who traveled with Bishop for a weekend men and boys conference hosted by one of the local Churches.
Under the auspices of WTM he has adopted 6 churches in Jamaica, West Indies, 2 in Uganda East Africa and hosts annual mission trips to support these churches financially, as well as equipping through conferences and yearly workshops. These missions also serve as a training tool for local mission interest. As many as 45 people representing 6 churches nationwide has traveled and served on the foreign mission field with Bishop.
Each year the (WTM) WHOLE TRUTH MINISTRIES, hosts a marriage conference, a leadership conference, and as recently as May 2006 hosted it’s first vision conference in Asheboro , N.C.
In August , 1998 Dr. Donald L. Smith was ordained and consecrated as a Bishop of Foreign Ministries and Affairs by the Presiding prelate Bishop Darrel L. Owens and Ecclesia International, Ministry Inc. of Chapel Oaks, MD.
February 2000, Bishop Smith was led by the spirit to enter into covenant agreement with the “Father’s House” a covenant ministry which is governed by Bishop Eddie Long, Pastor of the New Birth Church in Atlanta, GA.
He is also a member and supporter of the Aarons Army. A Pastor’s mentoring ministry of Bishop T.D. Jakes, of Dallas , Tx.
In the year 2000 Bishop was also led to transition the Mount Calvary Baptist Church, to the Greater Mount Calvary Christian Church. The ministry now strives to become a non-denominational, multi-cultural ministry.
Since this vision unfolded the Greater Mount Calvary Christian Church serves as a center that offers spiritual covering for more than 12 Churches to include two local Hispanic Congregations.
In recognition of Bishop Donald L. Smith’s tenacious commitment to Christian Education, on May 2000, the Richmond Virginia Seminary constructed and dedicated a 28-room, co-ed dormitory in his honor. It was named the “Donald L. Smith Dormitory” as a visual and concrete reminder to the community of his passion for educating mankind.
Being the spiritual father of over 21 ministers both male and female and realizing the need for higher education and ministerial training; Bishop with the approval and underwriting of Dr.Benjamin Robertson, President of the Richmond, Virginia Seminary established the WTM Bible Institute (an affiliate of RVS)on the campus of Greater Mount Calvary Christian Church.
The WTM Bible Institute is now able to confer degrees from Bachelor of Theology to the Doctorate of Ministry. Bishop presently serves as Director and part/time instructor.
The latest visionary endeavors of Bishop Smith involves the construction of a 35,000 Sq. Ft. “Family Life Center” at the Manassas church site. This center will contain a gymnasium, workshop facilities, youth and teen center, food and clothes closet, counseling center, banquet hall and swimming pool.
Also in August 2007 with great anticipation he expects to release his first book publication “It’s Just A Matter Of Time”. A treatise of encouragement and practical initiatives concerning God’s timing and man’s purpose as it relates to destiny.
